A Girl Traveling Through Troubled Times

Chapter 965 Investigating at the Police Station

Chapter 965 Investigating at the Police Station

Lin Peishan looked at it and laughed, saying, "You're amazing! I almost didn't recognize you."

Gui'er winked mischievously and said with a smile, "Then I'll go."

They returned to the police station. Lin Peishan stayed outside, while Gui'er went in through the side door they had just used.

Upon entering, there was a large room directly opposite. Everyone who came in through this door went into this large room, and there was a sign on the door that read "Reporting Crimes." Gui'er then realized that this was the office for reporting crimes. She followed the others into the office.

Inside the office, there were long wooden benches on both sides, and a tall counter. Behind the counter sat two police officers who were responsible for receiving people who reported cases. The counter was extremely high, almost like that of a pawn shop. The police officers sat there, looking down at the people who reported cases, and slowly and methodically questioned them.

All sorts of people came to report the crime: young women in cheongsams, men in suits, and peasant women in traditional Chinese jackets. Some said their homes had been burgled, some said their husbands had gone missing, and others said their cattle had been stolen. In short, it was noisy and chaotic, with everyone talking at once.

Gui'er watched for a while, and when she didn't find anyone paying attention to her, she tiptoed out.

She noticed that the first floor consisted of administrative departments. She wanted to ask someone where people arrested by the police were being held, but she was too afraid to ask. She looked around and saw that the second floor seemed to be the police office, so she quietly went up to the second floor.

Upon reaching the second floor, I discovered a large room with several smaller rooms nearby. The smaller rooms were likely the offices of a police chief, while the large room served as the offices of ordinary officers.

"Hey, who are you looking for?"

Gui'er was peeking around when someone called out to her from behind.

"Ah, my cow is missing. The village chief told me to come and report it." Gui'er remembered what she had overheard on the first floor and just blurted it out.

"The report is on the first floor. Go through the door to the first room; that's where they interrogate prisoners." The officer glanced at her, noticing her rural-style jacket, and said casually before turning and walking towards the main room.

Seeing that the police officer looked kind, Gui'er quickly asked, "Excuse me, officer, I also wanted to ask about my young master."

"Your young master? Who is this?"

Gui'er looked around and said cautiously, "Our master's surname is Xu. The young master used to be a teacher. Recently, he did a business deal with your police station, and they accused him of fraud and arrested him."

The officer looked up and thought for a moment, then said, "We didn't arrest anyone with the surname Xu here. It wasn't us who made the arrest. You should ask someone else." With that, he started to walk back inside.

Seeing that he was a talkative person, Gui'er quickly followed him inside and said, "Our young master was arrested after doing business with your Detective Ouyang. The master and madam are frantic. At least let me see him and ask him if he needs some clothes brought in. Officer, please."

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone in the office looked at Gui'er.

Gui'er also sensed something was amiss and quickly lowered her head.

“Ouyang Bao, I heard that your young master has been caught red-handed and is trying to extort money from you. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have released him so easily. Hurry back and tell your master and mistress to raise the money.”

It was only then that Gui'er noticed that there was actually a small office inside this large office.

A man in his forties, who was not tall, rather stocky, with a square face, slicked-back hair, and dressed in plain clothes, came out from inside. The police officers in the large room greeted him politely, "Brother Long."

Gui'er sensed that he was a junior police officer, so she quickly bowed and stepped forward, saying, "Officer, hello, may I see our young master? At least so that his family can have peace of mind."

“Ouyang Bao caught it, go find Ouyang Bao, what do you want with me?” The man called Brother Long looked Gui’er up and down.

"Are you the personal maid of that Xu family man?"

Gui'er was stunned for a moment, then immediately understood that the other person must not think she looked like a country person, so she quickly nodded.

At first, the police officer said, "Didn't you say you were here to find the cow?"

Gui'er had no choice but to hurriedly explain, "I'm afraid you won't let me in if I don't say it this way."

"Are you a maid or a concubine of this Xu family? Judging from your appearance, you don't seem like someone who does housework." Brother Long looked Gui'er up and down.

Gui'er glanced guiltily at the door. She felt that this department was not the same as Ouyang Bao's department, so she tentatively asked, "Actually, our master and mistress have already pleaded with Chief Ouyang. But Chief Ouyang just won't release him. You are Officer Long, right? If there is any way to get our young master released, our master and mistress will definitely reward you handsomely."

Brother Long glanced at her, shook his head, and said, "Go find whoever handled the case. Go find Ouyang Bao. Go, go, go." Then he waved her away.

Gui'er didn't dare to insist on keeping him, so she came out, looking back every few steps. Not long after she stepped out the door, she heard someone inside say to Brother Long, "Brother Long, although Ouyang Bao is competing with you for the position of Detective Chief, why not use this to bring him down?"

“It’s not good to use someone of unknown origin like this. He might be setting a trap for Ouyang Bao.”

“That’s true. But Ouyang Bao is currently scrambling for money everywhere, trying to bribe the chief detective to compete for the position of Chinese detective. He’s a formidable opponent for us. We need to find a way. For example, Xu Jing’s family is quite wealthy. If Ouyang Bao manages to extort a large sum of money from him, we’ll fall behind.”

"...Just do your own thing, why bother with so much?"

Hearing this conversation, Gui'er couldn't help but turn around and glance at the police chief called Brother Long. It seemed that he was Ouyang Bao's enemy, and perhaps this could be used to her advantage.

She walked around again but found no useful clues.

I was just about to go up to the third floor.

"Brother Leopard, wait for me!"

"Hurry up, stop slacking off."

As soon as Gui'er heard the familiar voice, she knew it was Ouyang Bao. She looked up and saw Ouyang Bao coming down from the third floor.

She quickly turned to hide, but the corridor was empty and there was nowhere to hide.

Having no other choice, she slipped into the large office she had just been in.

"Hey, hey, didn't we say that you have to go to the first floor to report a crime? Why are you here again?" One of the police officers inside said loudly as soon as he saw her walk in again.

Gui'er quickly nodded and bowed, saying, "Yes, yes, I was just about to go down."

She hesitated for a moment, then slowly turned around and walked towards the door.

As she approached the main office, she peeked inside, only to bump into Ouyang Bao coming down. Their eyes nearly met, and she quickly shrank back.
