Divorced woman with child travels through time

Chapter 549 The Woods Are Ambushed

Chapter 549 The Woods Are Ambushed

“Madam, don’t talk to people so casually next time. If I’m not careful, someone will come up to me. You’re a noble lady, you need to maintain some dignity,” Sister-in-law Nie nagged.

"Hehe, yes, I know. We weren't inside the fortress just now, so I didn't think it was anything. Besides, the fortress lord was with us, so what could have happened?" Chen Wenfang smiled somewhat embarrassedly, like a child being scolded by her.

Wang Shan chuckled to himself from behind. This woman was really lively and interesting, unlike those old-fashioned young ladies at all.

His brother went to work for General Wang, and asked him to come and stay with Madam Wang. He was initially a little reluctant, but after these days, he found that following Madam Wang was much more interesting than following that bunch of stinky men. Madam Wang also loved to join in the fun and went to play everywhere. He was living a very enjoyable life.

Wang Shan turned around and looked at the dozens of brothers following behind him. Fangcao didn't come today, otherwise it would be even more interesting. Three women make a drama. Fangcao is greedy, I'll bring her a bag of snacks later.

Wang Shan glanced at the sky, which was overcast and gloomy with rolling yellow clouds. He wondered if it was going to snow again.

Sister-in-law Nie looked at the dark sky and indeed, it looked like it was going to snow again.

"Madam, let's not go to the other forts today. It's going to snow, so let's go back early."

"Alright, we can go out when the weather is better." Chen Wenfang always listened to advice and was also concerned about the safety of the guards, so she agreed to return to the mansion.

The group turned and headed into the city. The soldiers were all wearing padded jackets, gloves, and hats, and cotton boots with waterproof linings. They were warm and comfortable. These clothes, transported from the south, were distributed every season. Wang Erniu never treated his soldiers with disrespect. Although their monthly allowance hadn't increased and was still only one or two taels of silver, they never lacked clothing for all four seasons, so they were never cold.

The long procession moved slowly along the path. After about three or four miles, they would turn onto the main road. It would take about five or six miles along the main road to reach the city gate. Wang Feng kept looking around anxiously. When he saw a dense forest ahead, he became even more nervous.

"Everyone be careful, stay alert, we'll be back in town soon. Come to the camp for some piping hot mutton soup!" Wang Feng shouted, his hands gripping the reins tightly.

"Captain, I don't want to drink mutton soup, it's too gamey. I want to eat stewed pork. I had a bowl of it at the manor last time, and I've been craving it for ages," a younger soldier complained with a grin.

"Sun Hai, you little rascal, all you do is eat. That was made by Madam herself, of course it's delicious. Don't say you're craving it, I'm craving it too." Wang Shan glanced at him sideways and spurred his horse closer to the carriage.

Suddenly, he fell silent, staring at the woods ahead. His tense expression affected everyone, and they all seemed to sense something was wrong, remaining silent.

As we got closer to the woods, the pitch-black forest always gave us an ominous feeling.

No! What's wrong?

Wang Feng gazed at the forest in thought, and his horse subconsciously slowed down. As he slowed, the group moved even slower, slowly making their way through the forest. Halfway through, Wang Feng suddenly spurred his horse to speed up!

Wang Feng suddenly realized, "That's right! I remember now! There were no birds chirping! Even in the coldest winter, there are still birds chirping!"

"Whoosh!" A barely audible sound of wind broke the silence.

Almost at the same time, Wang Feng shouted, "Zhang Dun, dodge the arrows!"

The crowd reacted swiftly, drawing their shields the instant they heard the command and taking cover behind them. It was a case of being caught off guard, but it was too late. Countless arrows shot out from the woods on both sides, piercing through the group walking in the middle of the road.

"Ah, ah!" a soldier screamed as an arrow pierced his shoulder, instantly staining his padded jacket crimson with blood. His comrades tried to pull him away, but were forced to defend themselves amidst the hail of arrows. Screams and battle cries mingled, plunging the ranks into chaos.

Wang Feng was extremely anxious. While loudly directing his soldiers to counterattack, he also protected the carriage and quickly pulled out a firework from his pocket, setting it off into the sky. Blue flames quickly bloomed in the sky, hoping that someone would come to their rescue.

Chen Wenfang was terrified inside the carriage. Sister-in-law Nie had already pulled the trigger, lowering the carriage's barrier. Arrows were stuck in it, making a clanging sound that mingled with the screams of the guards outside the carriage, a heart-wrenching scene.

"Don't be afraid, madam, we're here for you!" Sister-in-law Nie tried to calm herself down and comforted her.

Wang Shan brandished his longsword, slashing down incoming arrows while glaring furiously for any sign of the enemy. "Everyone stay calm! Don't panic!" he roared.

Some of the soldiers who had been shot by arrows struggled to their feet and continued fighting, while others writhed on the ground in agony. Blood stained the snow, a horrifying sight.

A barrage of arrows rained down from the forest. Gradually, Chen Wenfang's personal guards dwindled in number. With limited shields, many soldiers could only stand back to back to defend themselves. However, their bodies were no match for the arrows coming from all directions, and wounded or dead soldiers continued to fall.

"Ah..." Wang Shan roared helplessly, "If you have the guts, come out! What kind of hero hides like this!"

"Clang!" A golden, pointed arrow hurtled straight toward his chest!

"Clang!" Wang Shan sidestepped and slashed with his long sword, knocking away the feathered arrow.

"Captain! Be careful!" A low, concerned voice called out. Wang Shan turned around and saw Sun Hai slowly falling to the ground, two arrows lodged in his chest, one facing forward and one backward. Of the nearly one hundred soldiers beside him, only a tenth remained. Even the horses had stopped moving, neighing mournfully at their dead master.

Inside the carriage, it was pitch black. Chen Wenfang clasped her hands together and prayed silently. Sister-in-law Nie, as if facing a formidable enemy, held two swords and stared at the tightly closed carriage door without uttering a word.

Wang Shan was completely helpless, watching his companions die one by one, and his wounds multiplied. He struggled to deflect the arrows that were being shot at him, and only five people remained standing beside him. At this moment, it had been less than half a cup of tea's time before the signal was given.

Suddenly, a group of masked men in black flew out of the woods. Wang Shan immediately retreated, and the group of men stood with their backs to the carriage, guarding Chen Wenfang.

"You cowardly rats, only daring to stab people in the back?" Wang Shan spat out a mouthful of blood, glaring angrily at the men in black who had surrounded them.

A tall woman with an extremely slim waist stepped forward. "Hand over Chen Wenfang, and I'll spare your lives!"

"Pah!" Wang Shan spat out another mouthful of blood.

Without a word, the woman drew her bow and shot an arrow, killing one of his companions.

"Ah, I'll fight you to the death!" Wang Shan leaped up and slashed at her.
