Chapter 323 Visiting the Wounded
Chapter 323 Visiting the Wounded
"Aren't you going?" Xiao Hao asked Chen Xuanyu.
"No, that's too childish! I'll go see Big Bear Brother instead," said eight-year-old Chen Xuanyu with a mature-looking face.
"Then I'll go see him too."
"Let's go!" The two arrived at the communal sleeping area. Big Bear, with a bandage wrapped around his neck, looked like an old man, and earnestly advised Chengcheng with a constipated expression, "I'm really fine, just a minor injury. It's Mu Tou who's in more danger. I'll watch over him. You go and do your work." He couldn't take it anymore. Who would stay with a sick person and still have to study? He might as well let him die.
Chengcheng touched Mutou's forehead and said, "He's fine. The doctor said that as long as he doesn't have a fever, there's nothing to worry about. I'm not busy, so I can study here and help you catch up on your studies. Mr. Xu said your knowledge is too poor, so I'll help you."
"I really can't concentrate on studying. I'm already doing well just being able to write my own name. The mistress of the house said that you can't force learning." Big Bear said with a long face, there was really nothing they could do about him.
Just then, seeing Chen Xuanyu and the other person enter, Da Xiong seemed to see a savior. "Young Master Dong is here. Take him away. This child is too troublesome."
Chengcheng glared at him angrily but didn't leave. Unable to resist, she snapped at him, "You're such a grown man, and you still don't behave properly, yet you dare to criticize me!"
"Alright, alright!" Chen Xuanyu understood Da Xiong's predicament; he simply couldn't concentrate on his studies. But he was growing up too fast! Standing next to Da Xiong, calling him "brother" was no longer appropriate; Da Xiong now looked like his uncle.
"Are you alright? How are you?" Chen Xuanyu sat on his bed, patting his big hand with her small one to comfort him.
Xiao Hao wanted to chuckle, but he held it back.
"I'm fine, thank you for your concern, young master." Da Xiong, however, lay down and clasped his hands in a very serious bow.
"It's good that you're alright. Take good care of yourself and recover well." After saying that, Chen Xuanyu took out a sachet from his pocket, poured out a few silver coins, picked out the two largest ones, and gave them to him, saying, "These two are for you. Buy some good food to nourish yourselves. You've worked hard."
Big Bear was flattered and accepted the gift with both hands, his face full of piety. "Thank you, young master." Xiao Hao and Cheng Cheng, who were standing next to Chen Xuan Yu, nodded silently at his actions. He had really grown up and knew how to win people over. That was good.
"Okay, then take good care of your injury and keep an eye on Xia Mutou. We're leaving now," Chen Xuanyu instructed, and of course, he also used the excuse of needing to practice his skills to drag Chengcheng away.
"Don't worry, I know." Da Xiong breathed a sigh of relief, almost bursting into tears. Finally, it was quiet. Fearing that too many children might hurt someone, Chen Wenfang asked Brother Nie to give Da Xiong and Mu Tou a separate room for the time being.
Big Bear tugged at the corner of the wooden blanket, and seeing that he was alright, he himself fell into a deep sleep.
The one from the Tian family was being looked after by Uncle Hu and seemed to be recovering well. He was awake for a while at noon, took his medicine, and then went back to sleep.
When it was time for dinner and everyone was getting ready to eat, Big Bear rushed over, almost in tears, "Uncle Nie! The wood is getting hot! It's so hot! What should we do?"
"I'll go check!" Without saying a word, Brother Nie put down his bowl and went. Chen Wenfang and the others were also worried, so they all followed him into the room.
"Did you take your medicine this afternoon?" Wang Erniu asked.
“He ate it! I fed him myself, why is it still burning?” Aunt Hu explained.
"I'll go get the doctor!" Li Huanhuan said and ran off, thankfully she had a horse.
Everyone was extremely worried, but there was nothing they could do. Chen Wenfang looked at the empty medicine bowl; there was a little black residue, and she couldn't make out what it was. She went over and touched the wooden body; not only its forehead but its entire body was burning hot, its lips were chapped, and it was unconscious.
"Take off his clothes. Everyone else can go eat first. We'll change guards tonight. Aunt Liu, go and get that jar of good wine I have in my warehouse." There was no other way. Chen Wenfang didn't know much about wine either. She had bought that jar specifically to compare it after she tried brewing her own wine, but something came up and she had to leave it there.
"Okay!" Aunt Liu brought it over shortly. Chen Wenfang opened the wine jar, and a fragrant aroma wafted out. She poured out a bowlful and used a cloth soaked in wine to wipe the stripped wood. The men exchanged bewildered glances. Did this stuff really work? But they dared not utter a sound.
Seeing Chen Wenfang's tired appearance, Aunt Nie said, "I've already eaten, let me do it!"
“Okay.” Chen Wenfang handed it to her and gave her instructions, “Palms, soles, armpits, and buttocks, apply it all over them, keep applying it until the fever goes down.”
"Does it really work?" Aunt Li couldn't help but ask.
"I don't know either, but we have to try. What if the child gets brain damage from the fever? He wasn't very bright to begin with," Chen Wenfang explained honestly.
"Sigh! I hope you get better soon." Everyone sighed silently.
After passing two bends from Wangjiazhuang, there was a doctor in the village in front of the village. Li Huanqiu helped the man onto the horse, had the doctor put his arm around his waist, and rode ahead, returning as fast as lightning.
Aunt Li had just switched places with Aunt Nie, but her fever had gone down a bit.
"Oh dear, why did you strip them naked? What if they catch a cold?" The old doctor was thin and small, but very energetic. He started criticizing everyone as soon as he entered the room.
"Doctor, take a look at him. The medicine you prescribed isn't working; he still has a fever," Brother Nie advised.
"The child is already weak, so this incident is a mixed bag. If he recovers, great; if not, there's nothing we can do," the old doctor said after a thorough examination.
Listen to that tone! Chen Wenfang instantly exploded, "If your medical skills are bad, then they're bad! What do you mean 'there's no way'! Third Brother, see the guest out, drive to town and fetch another doctor. What kind of person is he?!"
"Hey! What do you know, you're just a woman!" The old doctor was about to scold someone.
Wang Erniu and Brother Nie stepped forward together, saying, "This way, sir..." and practically dragged him out. The complaints gradually faded away. Li Huanqiu had no choice but to go back to town.
"You guys keep wiping, I'm going to go find something." Chen Wenfang said and left. Mao Mao and Xiao Douya and the other kids squeezed outside the door and looked inside. They squatted in the corner and silently shed tears. Even the two Taoist priests came over to take a look and felt helpless, so they sighed.
The most urgent thing was to bring down the fever. As a last resort, Chen Wenfang went to the warehouse and found the herbs she had collected before. She grabbed a handful of dandelion and prunella vulgaris, soaked them in a bowl, made a thick juice, added some syrup, and went to Mu Tou's room. After it cooled down a bit, she fed it to the child spoonful by spoonful. Luckily, the child knew how to swallow, otherwise it would have been troublesome.
After drinking a bowl of medicine and wiping the wound for more than half an hour, the aunties' hands were exhausted. Finally, Mu Tou's fever subsided, and they breathed a sigh of relief before going to coax a group of children outside to sleep.
Li Huanqiu, pulling the doctor along, rushed back in a flurry.
"Ouch, my back!" came another old doctor, who was glaring at him and cursing, "If it weren't for the patient, I would have cursed you out."
"Alright, alright, you can scold me later. Go check on the child first; he has a persistent high fever."
