Chapter 259 Catching the Thief
Chapter 259 Catching the Thief
Listening to the county magistrate's sarcastic words, the lawyer suddenly understood.
Li Xiaoyu and Xiao Wang rented a house here, each with a room. Whenever they walked down the street to eat noodles, they would encounter people robbing them.
Xiao Wang took a mouthful of noodles and immediately chased after him.
The two men brought the robber back to the yamen. The county magistrate, who was sitting on the high bench, briefly asked the reason and then convicted him.
"He will be put in jail. When his family pays for his redemption, we will release him."
Hearing this, Li Xiaoyu's eyelids twitched.
After the others were taken away, she stopped the county magistrate and politely offered her opinion: "Mr. County magistrate, since he came out to rob money, I think his family doesn't have any money either. Can we formulate different punishments for different situations?"
Speak seriously to her.
The county magistrate thought it was normal for her to have naive ideas since she had just arrived.
After waiting for a long time, I became just like these old-timers.
He casually said, "As a member of the government, if you have any good ideas, you can go back and write them down." He pointed at the lawyer and said, "Let's discuss it together another day."
I could tell they were joking.
Li Xiaoyu blinked, pursed his lips and said nothing.
That afternoon, an old woman came to the government office to report a case. She knelt on the ground and cried heartbreakingly: "Sir, you have to make the decision for me, an old woman."
The county magistrate's ears were callused from hearing these words.
He slammed the gavel and asked solemnly, "Old woman, what grievance have you suffered? Tell me quickly."
The lawyer sat aside and took notes.
Li Xiaoyu sat next to him, holding a small notebook and a charcoal pencil, listening carefully to the old woman's words.
Hearing the county magistrate's voice, the old woman cried and said, "This afternoon, I was making lunch when I heard a clucking sound coming from the chicken coop. I dropped my spoon and came to see."
She cried louder and louder: "I ran over and saw that two chickens were missing. It's not easy for an old woman like me to raise a few chickens."
"This thief even stole things from an old woman like me. Isn't this going to cost me my life?"
"County magistrate, you have to make the decision for me."
The county magistrate became annoyed when he heard about these petty thefts, and he wanted to buy a few chickens for the old woman and put an end to the matter.
See Li Xiaoyu looking at him.
Thinking of setting an example for the newcomers, he lazily asked, "Grandma, when you chased after him, did you see what the thief looked like?"
"I saw it," the old lady nodded while crying.
She looked around the room and pointed at the master with a withered finger: "I saw the back of that person. He was slightly fat like him, with hair the color of dry straw, and he seemed to walk... with a slight limp."
When she pointed at him, the master scratched his face and complained quietly: "I am so handsome, and you say I look like a thief."
The county magistrate nodded: "That is, you didn't see his front."
"No, he was running too fast with two chickens in his hands. I could only see his back, not his face."
"I understand, grandma. I'll ask my master and the painter to go with you to the scene."
The lawyer was very unhappy to ride in the same carriage with Li Xiaoyu.
The former was too lazy to pay attention to him, and the old woman chatted: "Grandma, has your house ever been lost before?"
"Yes, I also went to the government office to report it, but the chicken came back the next day." Thinking of this, the old woman laughed happily: "It's really strange that it can come back on its own after being lost."
Hearing these words, Li Xiaoyu glanced at his master.
Master, if you feel guilty, don't start.
When they arrived at the old woman's house, he smiled and said to her, "It's better to have less trouble than more. Buying a chicken is not expensive."
Li Xiaoyu didn't want to playfully smile at him: "You guys do this a lot, don't you?"
"Not many, only a few dozen over the years."
"That's really unfair to you."
After saying this, Li Xiaoyu followed the old woman and headed towards her home.
The master stood there, frowning at Li Xiaoyu's back, "Is she praising me or scolding me?"
After inspecting the scene, the lawyer prepared to go back.
Seeing Li Xiaoyu walking in the direction the thieves were running away, he followed him impatiently, "I've seen enough, let's go back."
"Wait a minute."
Leaving behind two words, the woman walked forward alone.
The lawyer was very annoyed with her, but there was only one carriage and he couldn't leave her here, so he could only follow her impatiently.
"She always said it was a man with straw-colored hair. The problem is that in their village, no one has straw-colored hair."
Li Xiaoyu didn't take his impatience seriously.
The voice asked calmly, "Have you ever thought that the old lady sees colors differently from us?"
"Can the colors seen by the eyes be different?"
The master touched his belly and didn't quite believe it.
Rolling his eyes at him, he said expressionlessly, "You can go ask grandma what color her chickens are now."
The lawyer didn't believe it and actually went back to ask.
He took the old lady to the chicken coop, pointed to a chicken in the corner with pale yellow feathers and a black tail, and asked, "Grandma, what color is that chicken?"
The old lady smiled and replied, "Red."
He didn't believe it, and pointed to a big red rooster and asked, "What color is that?"
"Light red."
Master: “…”
He still didn't give up, so he took some other colored things to ask the old lady, but the answers he got didn't match the actual colors.
He quickly caught up with Li Xiaoyu and saw that he was running out of breath.
The woman snorted and laughed: "How is it?"
The master held his stomach and gasped: "You are right, but how did you know?"
The two walked to a three-way intersection and looked in three different directions. Li Xiaoyu gestured for each of them to explore a different place.
Before leaving, she whispered back, "I asked."
These three words stunned the master.
He thought about it carefully and then he remembered that they had just given up and asked some basic questions and never asked anything else.
Seeing that she was about to go in another direction, the master called her and said, "Come with me to another place and have a look. I think I know who it is."
Hearing this, Li Xiaoyu rolled his eyes at him.
"You know, why didn't you act before?"
I don't know why, but the master always felt that she had a very bad temper. To be honest, she was really scared by the beating he gave her that day.
He sighed, "That old lady always talks about yellow hair, yellow hair. In their village, except for the elderly with white hair, everyone else has black hair. When I came here before, a guy who was about as fat as me took the initiative to chat with me. His hair was not yellow and his feet were not lame, so I didn't think about it that way."
"Then why do you think it's him now?"
"I can draw an inference from what you said. Maybe his limp is fake?"
The two chatted as they arrived at the place.
You don't know until you go. You can smell the aroma of meat before you get close. You quietly walk to the wall and look inside with your heads down.
A slightly plump man was sitting in the main room, happily sucking meat.
Li Xiaoyu gestured to her master, then she quietly walked to the toilet and pulled the straw that covered the hut.
I saw a pile of chicken feathers in the mixture in the pit.
