Chapter 131: The King's Death (End)
Jon, with tears in his eyes, reached out and closed Alliser Thorne's eyes, then stood up and said to the people around him, "Why are you all standing here in a daze, waiting for the White Walkers to come to you again? Take the body of King Stannis to a safe place first."
His words brought the people back to their senses, and they all moved, carrying Stannis's body and Melisandre lying on top of him and retreating.
Jon felt a sense of relief as he watched them go. He knew he still had a lot of work to do, but now he needed to rest and collect his thoughts.
Just then, Jon noticed a tall figure in black robes standing silently under the tree. The man was wearing a long black robe and a hood on his head. His face was covered by shadows and his features could not be seen clearly.
Jon clenched the 'claw' in his hand, stared at the other party warily, and asked: "Who are you? Why do you want to help us?"
The mysterious man did not answer immediately, but stared at Jon quietly, with a strange light flashing in his eyes.
After a while, the mysterious man slowly spoke: "I have been paying attention to your growth, Jon Snow. I am very pleased to see your achievements today. I believe that if Ned were still alive, he would definitely be proud of you."
Jon's heart was shocked. He stared at the man in front of him with wide eyes, tears of surprise and excitement flashing in his eyes. He said tremblingly: "You are... Uncle Benjen? Is it really you? Great, you are still alive!"
Benjen nodded, and continued, "In fact, I am dead, Jon. But for some reason, I survive in the world in another form. The Children of the Forest resurrected me in ancient ways and gave me special abilities. Jon, I have been watching you secretly since you first set foot outside the Wall."
Jon listened to Benjen's narration in shock. He never thought that he would meet Benjen again, let alone that he would have such a mysterious experience.
Benjen lifted his hood, revealing a familiar yet strange face. One of his eyes was as blue as the deep night sky, while the other shone with emerald light, as if containing endless mysteries; half of his face was covered with delicate vines, a symbol of life and nature.
Jon wanted to go forward, but the guards beside him stopped him immediately and warned him not to get close. However, Jon firmly believed that Benjen would not hurt him, so he pushed the guards away and took a step forward.
"He is my uncle, Benjen Stark! He is the former chief ranger of the Night's Watch and also my family! If you let me go, he won't hurt me!" Jon said loudly, with firmness and trust in his voice.
Benjen looked at Jon with a smile, his eyes full of relief. He stretched out his hand to stop him from getting closer, and said with emotion: "Jon, you have grown up, become strong and brave."
A tear flashed in Jon's eyes. He said, "Uncle Benjen, come with me! Let's go home together! Robb, Bran, Rickon, Sansa, Arya, everyone has returned to the North, and they all miss you very much. Let's go back together and reunite as a family!"
Benjen shook his head slightly, with a hint of helplessness and sadness in his eyes. He whispered, "No, Jon, I can't go back. My current state is between the living and the dead, and I can only move with the power of magic. Once I set foot on the land south of the Wall, I will lose my magic power and truly die."
Jon frowned, unwilling to accept this fact. He clenched his fists and said firmly: "No, Uncle Benjen! You must come back, we need you! The North needs you! You can come back with me, there must be a way."
Benjen sighed and shook his head: "Jon, everyone has his own mission. The threat of the White Walkers is growing, and the power of the Night King is beyond your imagination. You go back and gather more people to fight against the Night King. Only when humans unite can they win. I can't give you guidance. The real battle depends on you." After that, Benjen retreated into the forest, ignoring the burning trees, and disappeared.
On the sea, the warships' gunfire gradually died down. The forest in front of the third line of defense had completely burned up, with the blazing flames reaching dozens of meters high. Those who had not retreated from the forest could no longer return. The bodies lost in the forest turned to ashes with the fire. Even the White Walkers could not withstand such a temperature, and they wailed and turned into ice chips and then melted.
The Night King stared at the warships on the sea. The ice fog could not block his sight. Humans had given him another surprise. This explosive weapon had a strong killing power against the White Walkers. Even if he was hit by a few bullets, he might be killed. In the battle tonight, he lost more than 200 White Walkers, and the number of wights was too numerous to count. Most of the bodies of the enemies he killed were incinerated and could not be replaced.
Across the flames, it could sense that the human presence there was gradually weakening. Humans could no longer be left alone. The Night King wielded his ice crystal machete and let out a sharp roar. More than a hundred tall White Walkers roared in response, leading a large number of wights to move toward the right.
Melisandre turned her attention back to the human side. She tried everything she could. Even mouth-to-mouth infusion of magic power failed to revive Stannis. Davos and the other generals gathered around and watched all this, the light in their eyes becoming increasingly dim.
With Stannis dead, the goal they were loyal to and fighting for no longer existed. The morale of Stannis's army plummeted, and if they continued to fight as fiercely as before, they would surely collapse.
Melisandre stared blankly at Stannis's body with empty eyes. Her faith collapsed at this moment, and her belief in the Lord of Light was also shaken.
Davos patted her shoulder gently and comforted her, "Madam, we must leave here. It is meaningless to continue fighting. I will take His Majesty's body back to the Queen."
Jon said hurriedly: "You can't leave yet. The evacuation work in the rear has not been completed. The White Walkers are eyeing us from the other side."
Davos scolded, "What does that have to do with us! Haven't we paid enough? Countless soldiers have sacrificed their lives for them, and even your majesty has sacrificed his life. This is not our war, we don't belong here! Now I want to take the remaining soldiers home safely."
Jon: "Are you just going to give up? This is a war between humans and white walkers. One side must fall before it ends. Don't you want to avenge King Stannis?"
Davos said dejectedly: "His Majesty is dead! Everything here is meaningless to us."
Tormund: "Let them go! This is our fight, and the southerners have paid the price. We will continue even without them."
The diffuse icy fog gradually dissipated, rays of sunlight appeared, and it was daybreak!
