Chapter 2583 - 67: Discovery at the Cave Roof
After walking for about another quarter of an hour, they saw candlelight ahead.
But the guards here were clearly much more alert. Before their group even reached the entrance, someone called out, "Who goes there?"
"It’s me!"
Tu Niu took the lead and squeezed his way out.
"Ah, Eldest!" One of them was overjoyed. "Eldest is back."
"Eldest, where have you been these past few days? Fourth Brother even went down the mountain to look for you."
"You little bastard, what’d you come looking for me for? Ain’t I back now?" Tu Niu stepped up and gave one of the lads a pat.
"Eldest, who are these people?" Another young fellow pointed at Ye Haoyang and the others and asked.
"People I ran into at the foot of the mountain." Tu Niu actually wasn’t clear about their identities either, he only knew they were very capable, and that was enough.
The lad who’d asked suddenly changed expression. The grin on his face vanished, replaced by a fierce look, and a blade slid out from his sleeve.
"Die, you traitor!"
Almost in the same instant, Ye Haoyang’s leg shot out and kicked the knife from his hand, while Ye Rongqing stepped forward and pinned him down.
The other young fellow had his arm yanked and held by Si.
Tu Niu was completely dumbfounded. "You... you all..."
The lad on the ground said bitterly, "These people are from the authorities, aren’t they? Just like Second Brother said, you’ve betrayed us, you sold out your brothers."
"Lock his jaw."
Ye Haoyang gave a few crisp cracks, and the jaws of the two guards were dislocated.
"According to what you said, there’s so much stuff in there. Why are there only two guards?"
Tu Niu answered with a hint of bitterness, "I already said I’m the only one who knows about this little passage. The brothers all think there’s only that main road in front, and if you go by the main road you’ll definitely pass by their quarters. This is at the back."
Ye Haoxuan peered over, and sure enough, beyond some shade trees there was a row of wooden houses.
"Let’s go in!"
It wasn’t some huge cave, and there were no branches. Once inside, everything was clear at a glance: lots of chests stacked in neat rows. Si went up and pried one open with his knife, and a flash of golden light burst out at once.
"The area around this entrance used to be thick with bamboo. You wouldn’t notice it if you weren’t looking."
Ye Haoxuan nodded. "I’ve got no interest in this gold. Since you discovered it, whether you share it with your brothers or not is your business."
Tu Niu was overjoyed. "Thank you, Master!"
"Get up."
After a while, San came in. "The markers are all set."
"Mm." Ye Haoxuan nodded. "Take Tu Niu and walk it once."
Then he turned to Tu Niu. "Remember the route carefully. When the Prefect and the others come tomorrow, you’ll lead them along that passage, understand?"
"Yes, I understand."
Once Tu Niu had left, Ye Haoyang began carefully inspecting the cave.
After a bit, he beckoned to Ye Rongqing. "Little Third, come here and hold the torch higher."
"Second Brother, found anything?"
Ye Haoyang said nothing, just stared at the ceiling. After a while, he got annoyed that Ye Rongqing wasn’t holding the torch steady enough, so he took it himself and shone it around.
"Are you cold?"
Off to the side, Ye Haoxuan wasn’t paying attention to the two brothers at all; he just kept fussing over Li Luru.
Li Luru rolled her eyes at him. In this season, even if it was damp and chilly in the cave, it wasn’t cold enough to freeze anyone.
Seeing her eye-roll, Ye Haoxuan pinched her nose. "Know what’s good for you, will you? Can’t you tell I’m worrying about you?"
When she glared at him again, Ye Haoxuan just chuckled.
