Chapter 246 Gu Family Affairs
Chapter 246 Gu Family Affairs
If you choose the Chinese Language and Literature major, you must have some interest in writing or literature.
We said goodbye to our senior classmates and strolled around some small streets around the university.
Universities are generally not built in more prosperous areas, but are relatively remote. Except for the street in front of the entrance which is a bit lively, the other streets are a bit deserted.
About 20 minutes’ walk from the school, we saw a relatively simple cinema.
After we had finished our tour, we headed back.
When I passed by a stall selling hot and sour noodles, I saw many classmates wanting to buy them. I also wanted to try it because it was not sold in town.
I had eaten it in my previous life, and the sour and spicy taste was particularly appetizing, so I wanted to buy it.
"Wei Ying, let's buy this to eat tonight!"
I said to Gu Weiying beside me that after spending half a day together, we all knew each other pretty well, so I didn’t think much about it. I knew that the food in the school cafeteria wasn’t very tasty, so I asked her to join us.
"You go ahead and buy it. I ate the food you gave me just now late. I'm not very hungry."
A blush appeared on Gu Weiying's face.
I immediately understood that her family must be in financial difficulty and she was reluctant to spend a penny.
So I didn't force it and bought two bowls anyway.
Looking at Gu Weiying's sallow complexion, she was a little taller than me and so thin that it made me feel sympathy for her. She must have never eaten anything good and was suffering from severe malnutrition.
I carried the two bowls and walked back to the dormitory with her. I didn't give them to her on the way because I was afraid that she would feel embarrassed.
When we got to the dormitory, I handed her a bowl.
"You, you bought it for me?"
She was excited and surprised, and her face flushed.
"I thought that since the portion was small, I bought both bowls for yourself."
"How can I eat so much? Seeing so many people eating, I'll buy you a bowl to try. I've never eaten this kind of hot and sour noodles before."
I said with a smile.
"I was thinking of going back to the dormitory to eat the cakes I brought from home."
She said embarrassedly.
"What kind of cake is that? Bring it to me and let me try it."
In order to ease her embarrassment, I took the initiative to ask her for some bread so that she would not feel that she owed me a favor.
She immediately smiled happily, quickly took out a bag of biscuits from her bag and handed one to me.
I took a look and saw that it was the kind of pancake made from flour ground from wheat grown at home. It was sold in town and my grandmother often bought some to eat.
The pancakes I bought are hard only in the baking pan, while the rest are soft. They have a sweet taste when you bite them. They are delicious.
What Gu Weiying took out was obviously homemade, a little hard, I broke off a piece and put it in the hot and sour noodle soup, smiling and said to Gu Weiying.
“This is delicious, and it tastes even better when dipped in soup.”
"Really."
He also followed my example and broke off a piece and put it in the soup.
We both ate happily and laughed. I saw that she brought a big bag of such biscuits, and I didn’t know how long it would take her to finish them.
It should be to save some money. After all, the consumption level in the city is much higher than that in the countryside.
I understand her very well, and my conditions are not much better than hers.
"Wei Ying, when we have time, we can work and study to earn some living expenses."
After we finished eating and cleaned up, I presented my idea to her.
"Really? We can earn a living?"
Her eyes lit up and she couldn't wait to sit next to me.
"We can use our rest time to do odd jobs or start a small business."
I said with a smile.
"I don't know anything. You have to teach me. If I can make money, I won't be afraid of any hardship or fatigue."
She had a determined look and was full of confidence.
It seems that the other two roommates will not arrive until tomorrow, so we started chatting after washing up in the evening.
Gu Weiying completely let down his guard against me.
We were lying on the bed, and she told me in detail about her family situation.
Her father has a leg disability and her mother is blind.
The two got married when they were quite old, and after marriage, she gave birth to his elder brother, Gu Weiguo.
The family didn't have much land, and they mainly relied on her father to repair shoes for people in town to support the family's daily expenses.
His mother just did some housework at home within her ability.
She was born as a twin to her brother when he was 7 years old, and she and her brother grew up in this environment.
When they grew up, both Gu Weiguo and she were very sensible and started helping with farm work at home when they were a few years old.
Both of them are very competitive, especially Gu Weiguo, who had very good grades when he was studying.
But in order not to add burden to his family, he deliberately left a few questions unanswered during the high school entrance examination, just to get into a technical secondary school. He was afraid that he would get bloated and have to go to high school.
This is something his family cannot afford given their financial situation.
God was kind to him. Gu Weiguo successfully passed the entrance exam to a technical secondary school, majoring in accounting. After graduation, he was assigned to a factory in the city as an accountant.
Her mother was diagnosed with lung disease two years ago and has to take medicine all year round, and the family’s finances are even tighter.
In recent years, Gu Weiguo's salary has been used to subsidize his family.
Like me, Gu Weiying failed to get into technical secondary school. After graduating from junior high school, she didn’t want to continue studying. She planned to learn a skill and go to work in the city like other children in the village.
Gu Weiguo knew what she was thinking, so he took a special leave to go home and scolded her. With his insistence, Gu Weiying went to high school.
But high school education is not compulsory, and you have to pay for tuition and living expenses yourself.
Gu Weiguo's salary can barely cover all the family expenses.
Gu Weiying is a good student and should have no problem getting into university, but Gu Weiguo is worried again.
The family has not had any savings in these years, and if my sister goes to college, I don’t know where the tuition will come from.
Before the Chinese New Year last year, he made an important decision.
He heard that working in the coastal areas would earn several times more than in the inland areas, so he applied for unpaid leave from his job.
The leaders of his unit knew his family's situation, and the procedures went very smoothly.
As soon as the Spring Festival was over, he followed the young people in the village and boarded a train to the coastal city.
He remitted all the money for Gu Weiying's tuition, but the money he remitted was only enough for tuition, not a penny for living expenses.
Gu Weiguo wrote a letter to his sister, asking her not to worry and to send him his salary when he got it. He also asked her to borrow 200 yuan from relatives for living expenses and wait for him to return it.
But Gu Weiying didn't want to borrow money anymore. His family had asked relatives to borrow money many times. Although they had slowly paid it back, they didn't say anything on the surface, but they were always unhappy in their hearts.
So he thought of an idea. He ground flour at home and made a lot of pancakes to last him for a month.
After listening to her story, I felt very sympathetic and secretly decided that I must do something for her, even if it was just to earn some living expenses, so that her life would not be so difficult.
We chatted very late that night, and I briefly told her about my family situation.
She admires my grandmother very much for raising me so well on her own.
The next day, we both slept until after 10 o'clock. After we got up, a new classmate came in, dressed very fashionably.
Judging from her accent, she is not from this city. From her clothes and the things she brought, it is not difficult to tell that her conditions are quite good.
She looked at Gu Weiying and me, and knew at a glance that we were country girls, so she didn't even say hello.
