Chapter 245 – Where’s the Boss?
Chapter 245 – Where’s the Boss?
“Huh? Who are you? You’re not supposed to be here!”
The first floor of Thivadi’s mansion was clearly a command center. One of the rooms had crates with supplies, others tables with maps, reports, plans, weapons, everything the demons needed to cause trouble in human lands. The soldiers from this neighboring kingdom guarded the outside while the outsiders shamelessly conspired against them on the other side of the walls.
“Who let humans get inside? We have to silence them!”
The biggest door from the first floor’s hall led to a room with an ongoing meeting involving more than twenty demons. Lythea’s intel said that Thivadi didn’t have a lot of demon subordinates with him. Was this all of them?
“Who do you think you’re gonna silence?” Carol raised her sword forward as part of the vanguard. “We’re the ones who are going to wipe you out. As revenge!”
Every demon at the large conference table stood up and drew a weapon. They wore military uniforms with capes over their backs. With the curtains closed, they could have their horns out during their meeting, and no one would have a clue.
“I’ve been waiting for this!” “Yes!” Katja and Sarasa stabbed the first two demons, almost jumping over Carol to get to their enemies faster.
After two deaths, the other demons weren’t just sitting ducks anymore. The next closest to Katja swung an axe at her. She blocked, attacked, but a demon with a sword blocked. The axe, the sword, and even a rapier went after her. She kicked a chair at the third to make space to dodge and block.
“Guah!” The demon hit by the chair fell, but two more immediately took his place.
Katja dodged their weapons, but small cuts opened along her arms. The demons attacking her grinned and cut off her escape with a few more attacks.
“Gyahahahahahaha! Do you seriously think you did this?” Katja raised her sword with the biggest grin in the room hiding just behind her arms. “This is where things get fun!” The red blade swung in a full circle, instantly chopping four bodies in half. A big chunk of the table and a few chairs got caught in Katja’s range and exploded along with the demons’ bodies.
“Guhhh… Watch it!” Carol raised an arm to cover her face. “Damn it… They got started before me… Leave some for the rest of us, will you?!”
With half the conference table gone, Carol had access to the group at the back.
Sarasa didn’t look like she needed help. The first kill was as fast as Katja’s, but then she was forced to evade and parry while the demons took turns attacking. If there was a gap, she struck. It wasn’t as flashy, but the fight was in her favor, and she was slowly whittling down their numbers.
“Who are these girls? Why are we suddenly in the middle of a battlefield?!”
“Didn’t you hear what I said?” Carol cut through the debris and swung her sword down at the target in front of her. He was another sword fighter and easily blocked her attack, holding his sword above his head. “We’re wiping you out! Now be a good boy and die!”
“Gaah!” Her empty hand now held a black blade the opened a gash across his chest that splashed his blood up to the ceiling.
“Don’t falter! This is our chance to prove ourselves!”
A demon dual-wielding swords raised their side’s morale. Carol pointed the black sword at him, and he leaned forward. After his words, all of them were either fighting or waiting for an opening, and he had just accepted a challenge of sorts against the dual-wielding Carol.
But Carol didn’t attack. She just let go of the black sword.
Yet the sword didn’t fall. “Huh?” And the inspiring demon died. Like a bullet, the black sword flew in a straight line and pierced the demon’s neck in an instant. Only then did Carol’s illusion lose its form and mix with the puddle of blood on the ground.
“Dammit! You’re not getting away with this!”
Next, a demon holding a crossbow at the back managed to lock onto Carol while she was busy. As he locked onto her, someone else locked onto him. *Boom!* A sniper’s round cracked the wall after splattering the head in its way.
“Wha-?!” “Why do they have guns?!” Some demons asked.
“Don’t worry… There’s plenty here for everyone…” Hecate said.
“Wa- wait… I’ll give you a hand too…” Lythea flapped her wings to squeeze through the door. “Eeek! That piece of wood almost hit me… I can’t find an opportunity to go in… Hehe… Why did a piece of trash like me think she could accomplish anything?” She flopped down to her knees.
“Don’t sweat it.” Ririna placed a hand on her shoulder. “We can’t really do anything but enjoy the show when they get like that. We’ll get our chance.”
“Sigh… We were being so sneaky then it just turned into a mess… I- I didn’t expect they’d get so violent…” Lythea said.
“Well… It’s not like they’ve forgotten the plan.”
The conference room had turned into a mess in a little over a minute. Like a hurricane had passed through and only left a handful of demons still standing.
“Gotcha!” Carol managed to push a demon down by the collar after a rising swing sent his sword flying. “It’s over for you. Speak up if you want to live.” The blade pressed against his neck. A thin line of red dripped onto the metal. “Where’s your boss? Second floor, right? Which room? Think he’s trying to escape by now?”
“He- he’s in the room at the end of the hall after going upstairs! Thivadi won’t run without a fight!” The demon said.
“Good. And good on you for collaborating. As a reward, I’ll spare you.” The panicked smile on his face lasted a second until a grin spread across Carol’s face. “If you’re still alive by the time you wake up, you’re free to go on with your life.”
A strong punch knocked his lights out, and Carol left him on the floor like trash.
“Tha- that’s how she shows mercy? What a monster…” Lythea jumped behind Ririna.
The demons were wiped and the room went silent.
“Alright… We know where Thivadi is now. Demons are done. Next are the undead.” Carol flicked her wrist as she returned to the entrance.
“Undead… There’s gonna be even more of them, right?” Katja asked.
“Probably.” Sarasa shrugged. “He’s above us, isn’t he? Let’s not waste any more time.”
…
And no more time was wasted. The girls regrouped and headed upstairs as soon as they could. Thivadi escaping was a serious risk after all the noise. Only an idiot would fight a losing battle. This mansion was his base of operations. It couldn’t be given up without a fight, and he was a man confident in his abilities. According to their intel.
“Katja, you went a little too far.” Hecate looked over her arms as they approached the door at the end of the hallway. “We promised Iroha we’d return safely. This next fight might actually be pretty dangerous.”
“Ughh… Th- this time, it’s actually unfair for you to single me out… You were swinging around your rifle like you were in a shooting range. You were just as bad as me.”
“She got you there…” Carol smirked. “But Hecate has a point. Let’s at least communicate and work together during this fight.” The girls exchanged some nods, but before anyone could say anything else…
“You may do as you wish, but I’m afraid it won’t make much of a difference.”
A pompous voice echoed through the hall and stopped them in place.
The sun outside cast a large, dark, diagonal shadow that covered the door to Thivadi’s office and a big chunk of the hallway. From the windows on the left, the white floor tiles hit by the light reflected a golden hue back at the girls.
The shaded part of the hallway wall to the left trembled, and the owner of stepped out of the shadow to the center of the hallway. Silver hair, white suit, and red eyes. The upper half covered in shadow, highlighting confident red eyes.
The girls all drew their weapons when he stopped.
“Ehh… You came to greet us yourself?” Katja said.
“But of course. I don’t need savages like you dirtying my office.”
“We can do you a favor if it means we get to kill you a little earlier.” Carol grinned. “Where are your buddies?”
“My ‘buddies’ have better things to do than babysit a handful of brats. You didn’t even bring the heroine with you. Are you looking down on us? My pawns alone will be more than enough to deal with you.”
The shadows in front of Thivadi wobbled all at once, and all manner of undead quickly filled the corridor. Humanoid zombies and skeletons, and plenty of monsters and other small creatures.
“It’s just him? This should be easy then.” Katja said.
“Pfft… Come on, don’t take him at his word.” Sarasa said.
“I- it’s okay… Even if Molt shows up, I can keep him busy.” Lythea tightened the grip on her javelin. “If we all work together, we can do this.”
“Of course, we can… We didn’t come here to fail.” *Boom!* Hecate fired the first shot. Her scope lined with Thivadi’s head, but the undead in front instantly jumped in front of the bullet. Enough heads exploded for Thivadi’s unscathed face to reappear in the scope.
“Well… I won’t deny that you’ve got some gusto. Pretty impressive for mere humans.” Thivadi raised his hand and the horde of undead rushed forward. “Try to entertain me.”
