Chapter 17 The Test of Distance
Chapter 17 The Test of Distance
On a summer afternoon, sunlight filtered through the leaves, dappling the streets of the small town. A gentle breeze brought a touch of coolness, but couldn't dispel the languid atmosphere. Shen Yichen walked home alone, clutching the acceptance letter that would determine his future. His feelings were complex, a mixture of anticipation for the future and apprehension about the unknown.
Shen Yichen was a renowned top student in town, consistently ranking at the top of his class from elementary school. This time, he successfully gained admission to the city's best high school, an honor that also presented a new challenge. However, at this moment, he felt little joy. He thought of his parents, who had toiled day and night to support his education, their faces etched with the marks of time. He knew that this acceptance letter was not only an affirmation of his personal achievements but also a reward for his family's hard work.
Just as he was lost in thought, a sudden sound interrupted his reverie. "Ouch!" came a cry of surprise, followed by the sound of a girl falling to the ground. Shen Yichen looked up and saw a girl sitting on the ground not far away, her books scattered all over the floor.
He rushed over, knelt down, and asked with concern, "Are you alright?"
The girl looked up, and a pair of bright eyes came into view. She had long, jet-black hair, and her face showed a hint of shyness and embarrassment. "I...I'm fine, I just tripped and fell," she said as she tried to get up from the ground.
Seeing this, Shen Yichen quickly reached out to support her and helped her pick up the scattered books. "Are these your books? Let me help you pick them up."
The girl nodded gratefully, her voice barely audible: "Thank you."
While picking up the books, Shen Yichen inadvertently glanced at one in the girl's hands—"Literature and Dreams." He also liked this book, so he couldn't help but ask, "Do you like this book too?"
The girl paused for a moment, then gave a bright smile: "Yes, I really like the stories in them. They always give me endless imagination and strength."
Shen Yichen smiled too. He hadn't expected to meet someone with the same hobby in this small town. "Me too. I feel like every story in this book is like a world, immersing you completely and making it impossible to tear yourself away."
The two chatted as if they had endless things to say. The girl's name was Lin Youran, and she was a student at another middle school in town. She was introverted and not usually talkative, but she would become exceptionally talkative when she met someone who shared her interests.
After chatting for a while, Shen Yichen suddenly realized that it was getting late and he needed to go home to pack his luggage, as he was going to register for school the next day. "I have to go now. I'm going to school in the city tomorrow," he said with some reluctance.
Upon hearing this, a hint of disappointment flashed in Lin Youran's eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. "Then... I wish you all the best," she said with a smile, as if cheering Shen Yichen on.
Shen Yichen nodded, turned to leave, but suddenly stopped, took out the admission notice from his pocket, and handed it to Lin Youran. "This... is for you, consider it a souvenir."
Lin Youran looked at the acceptance letter in her hand in surprise, her eyes slightly reddening. "This...this is too precious, I can't accept it," she quickly declined.
Shen Yichen smiled, his smile warm and firm. "It's okay, for me it's just the beginning. But for you, it might be an inspiration. I believe you can also get into your dream school and realize your dreams."
Looking into Shen Yichen's sincere eyes, Lin Youran felt a surge of warmth in her heart. She no longer refused, but carefully put the acceptance letter away. "Thank you, Shen Yichen. I will cherish it and strive to catch up with you."
The two exchanged a smile, then turned and left. Shen Yichen's figure gradually disappeared into the afterglow of the setting sun, while Lin Youran stood there, watching him leave until his figure completely vanished from sight.
That night, Lin Youran lay in bed, clutching the acceptance letter tightly in her hand, her heart filled with unprecedented motivation and determination. She secretly vowed to study hard, get into the same university as Shen Yichen, and continue pursuing their literary dreams together.
On his first day in the city, Shen Yichen wrote a letter to Lin Youran. In the letter, he shared his feelings about the new environment and his hopes for the future. He also encouraged Lin Youran not to give up on her dreams and to bravely pursue her happiness.
Upon receiving the letter, Lin Youran was so moved that tears welled up in her eyes. She immediately wrote back to Shen Yichen, telling him that she was also studying hard and striving to reunite with him as soon as possible.
And so, the two kept in touch through letters, sharing their lives and studies. Although they were separated by distance, their hearts were closely connected. Whenever they encountered difficulties or setbacks, they would think of each other, of that summer afternoon, and of that youthful yet firm promise.
Time flies, and three years have passed in the blink of an eye. Through tireless effort, Lin Youran finally gained admission to the same university as Shen Yichen. When she stood at the school gate and saw that familiar figure, all her hard work and perseverance turned into tears, streaming down her cheeks and dripping onto the ground beneath her feet.
When Shen Yichen saw Lin Youran, he was too excited to speak. He stepped forward and hugged her tightly, as if he wanted to pour all the longing and waiting of the past three years into this embrace.
"You Ran, you did it! You really did it!" His voice was a little choked up, but full of joy and pride.
Lin Youran looked up at Shen Yichen's loving eyes, her heart filled with happiness and contentment. "Yes, I did it. Because I had a promise, a youthful yet firm ten-year promise."
They smiled at each other, as if they had returned to that summer afternoon, where their youthful and innocent feelings had grown stronger and deeper with the passage of time. They knew that the road ahead was long, but as long as they relied on each other and walked hand in hand, they would surely be able to get through every spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and embrace their bright future.
