Chapter 260 Ah Li, you're so good to me
Gu Chang'an nodded slightly.
Shen Li offered a fruit: "Husband, eat this first. The meat should be ready soon."
Gu Chang'an smelled the smoke and couldn't help but wonder, "Won't this reveal our location?"
Although he had just woken up, he could tell that he and the others were still in danger, otherwise Ah Li would have taken him back to town to see a doctor instead of hiding in the cave.
If it is dangerous, is an open flame even more dangerous?
"My husband is simply too clever for his own good." Shen Li's tone was full of affection. After worrying for so long, seeing Gu Chang'an wake up made her happy, and she just wanted to coax him.
“Ah Li is no less impressive; there must be a reason for that.” Gu Chang’an smiled along with her.
Shen Li blinked, her expression somewhat mischievous: "Actually, it's because I want to eat it cooked; raw food is hard to swallow."
Gu Chang'an paused for a moment, then laughed, his eyes crinkling. His Ah Li was still a child at heart.
He's just a clever kid; he can tell from those words that this isn't a safe place, and the enemy can be found.
"Ah Li, I have a flintlock pistol strapped to my leg, wrapped in a leather bag so it shouldn't have gotten wet. Do you think it's usable?" Gu Chang'an tried to get up, but couldn't.
“No water got in.” Shen Li said, taking it from the side: “I took it out when I was bandaging my husband. It’s already loaded with ammunition. Husband, keep it safe in case of emergency.”
Gu Chang'an didn't take it, but shook his head and said, "A-Li, take it."
"It's alright, I can make anything into my weapon." Shen Li insisted on placing the musket beside him, and then rolled up her sleeves to untie the hidden weapon tied to her wrist.
That was a gift from Lin Wan'er; each arrow on it was coated with a sleeping potion and could be used for short-range self-defense.
Without letting Gu Chang'an explain, she tied the wrist to the one he could lift.
"Ah Li, you can't just think of me and not yourself!" Gu Chang'an's voice was urgent and even more hoarse.
"My husband, just take care of me." Shen Li said lightly, "We won't separate, and my husband can protect me with his weapons."
As Gu Chang'an watched her movements, his vision gradually blurred. What did he do to deserve marrying A-Li? What kind of good fortune made A-Li treat him so well?
When Shen Li looked up, she saw that his eyes were even redder than before, and upon closer inspection, she could even see some moisture. She paused for a moment, then chuckled softly, "Why is my husband, a grown man, crying like this?"
"Ah Li, you're so good to me." Gu Chang'an held her arm with one hand.
"It's because you're even nicer to me." Seeing him moved, Shen Li felt even more guilty. This was a man who would never hesitate to die for her, yet he was shedding tears because of something she did for him.
She had never seen him show such an expression in her previous life, which had been so painful.
Gu Chang'an pulled Shen Li to his side and hugged her for a while. When he wanted to say something, he found that Shen Li had fallen asleep. He knew without thinking that A Li must have suffered a lot.
Half an hour later, the aroma of venison filled the air, but Shen Li still showed no reaction. Gu Chang'an frowned slightly and called out softly, "Ah Li, Ah Li."
Shen Li opened her eyes almost instantly, her clear black and white eyes filled with vigilance. She had just been unconscious; it was more like she was in a coma than asleep.
She had been on edge the whole time, and was a little flustered because of her earlier lapse in vigilance, but she breathed a slight sigh of relief when she heard that there was no noise down the mountain.
"Don't be afraid, A-Li." Gu Chang'an comforted her with a pained expression, "It's alright, I just wanted you to wake up and eat something."
Seeing his worry, Shen Li quickly smiled and said, "It's alright, my husband. I'm just a little nervous."
The venison was quickly brought into the cave, along with chicken and rabbit, as well as a variety of wild fruits and spring water.
“You’ve got quite a lot of prey,” Shen Li joked as she sat up.
"There's still some outside. I roasted a lot while we were making a fire. We'll wrap up the rest to make dry rations. That should be enough for you and the master for the next few days," the servant said, trying to curry favor.
“Well done, but there might not be much left.” Shen Li dozed off for a while and, after taking a lot of herbs and deer blood, felt better. She then set her sights on half a deer.
Gu Chang'an was able to get up with difficulty, and the two sat on the ground to eat. After being seasoned with some herbs, the meat tasted not as good as when it was carefully cooked, but it was still quite good.
Gu Chang'an ate some and was full. He then began to cut meat for Shen Li, placing it on banana leaves and serving it to her piece by piece.
Shen Li ate half a deer, then half a chicken and a rabbit. Gu Chang'an stopped her in the end because he was worried that she would get sick from eating so much.
She blinked pitifully, but Gu Chang'an quickly comforted her.
"Ah Li, be good. If you're not full, eat earlier for the next meal," Gu Chang'an gently advised.
"Then just one kiss from my husband will suffice," Shen Li said, tilting her head back.
Gu Chang'an smiled helplessly yet indulgently, then lowered his head and gently kissed her lips.
Shen Li wanted to continue their affectionate act, but then she noticed fine beads of sweat on his forehead. She realized that with his injuries, sitting for so long to cut meat for her must have been a struggle.
"Silly husband, lie down quickly." Shen Li helped him lie down and touched his forehead. He still had a fever, but it wasn't too hot, probably because of the medicine.
Gu Chang'an was reluctant to lie down, but if he continued to hug A Li, she would definitely get angry, so he had no choice but to obediently lie down and rest.
Shen Li noticed his hesitation and asked with a smile, "Still want to kiss me?"
Before Gu Chang'an could respond, she raised her eyebrows and her expression darkened slightly.
They arrived quickly.
She had recovered some of her strength, but judging from the sound of footsteps, there were probably quite a few people coming, and she might not be able to handle them.
"My lord, my lady!" A servant ran into the cave, his face beaming with joy. "The army has arrived! They've already come up the mountain!"
"The army?" Shen Li raised an eyebrow slightly.
"Yes, we are saved."
Gu Chang'an and Shen Li exchanged a glance, neither of them showing joy, but rather deep worry.
"Husband, rest well. Remember to take your medicine again before tonight, and change this topical dressing as well," Shen Li gently instructed, then added, "I'll go check on it."
"Ah Li, be careful." Gu Chang'an looked worried, but unfortunately, he couldn't walk.
"Don't worry, my husband." Shen Li squeezed Gu Chang'an's hand, got up and walked out.
Gu Chang'an saw the slender figure outlined by the light shining through the cave entrance, clenched his fist tightly, and waited for her to walk out before slowly crawling out of the cave.
Once Shen Li left the cave, she was out of Gu Chang'an's sight. So she took a grilled fish from a nearby shelf, put it to her lips, blew on it gently, and waited for it to cool down.
The army came from four directions, almost surrounding the mountain. There were thousands of people climbing the mountain at their feet, and the distance was still far.
“Madam, we are saved now,” a soldier said.
