Chapter 4 Your husband has impressive arm strength!
The chef chuckled, "You're welcome, you're welcome. You're so thin, eat more!"
After getting the vegetables, I went to get the porridge.
The porridge was made by cooking a mixture of rice and millet until it was thick, and it was served in a smaller bowl.
The soup was cabbage and tofu soup, clear and watery, with a few cabbage leaves and tofu cubes floating on top.
The four of them found a table by the window and sat down.
The tables and chairs in the canteen are all long wooden tables and benches, wiped clean, but after a few years of use, the surfaces are worn shiny.
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan set out their bowls, looked at the food in front of them, and exchanged a glance.
"It's better than I expected," Lin Weiwei said softly, picking up the steamed bun and taking a bite.
The rough texture made her frown, but after chewing it a bit, the aroma of the grain came out.
Su Wanwan picked up a piece of potato with her chopsticks. It was stewed until soft and tender, with a very mild flavor, just a hint of salt and the sweetness of the cabbage.
She ate in small, delicate bites, her movements refined.
Bai Rongbei and Bai Si'an ate quickly and didn't say anything, just listening to the two girls whispering to each other.
"Look at that guy over there, isn't he pretty handsome?" Lin Weiwei nudged Su Wanwan with her elbow, glancing at a table diagonally opposite.
Several young officers were sitting over there, one of whom had a distinct profile and was drinking porridge with his head down.
Su Wanwan glanced at it, her face slightly flushed: "Don't look at me like that."
"What's wrong with looking?" Lin Weiwei said matter-of-factly. "Everyone has a love for beauty. Besides, I'm a married woman now, it's not illegal for me to look."
As she spoke, she glanced at Bai Si'an again.
Bai Si'an was focused on eating his steamed bun, as if he hadn't heard her.
Su Wanwan also secretly glanced at Bai Rongbei.
He ate very seriously, taking a bite of vegetables and a bite of steamed bun, chewing slowly but with real focus.
She noticed his hand holding the chopsticks; his fingers were long, with distinct knuckles, and blue veins could be seen on the back of his hand.
Just then, Bai Rongbei suddenly looked up, and their eyes met.
Su Wanwan quickly lowered her head, her ears burning.
Bai Rongbei didn't say anything and continued eating.
Su Wanwan has a small appetite; she ate half a steamed bun, a few bites of vegetables, and a bowl of porridge, which was about all she ate.
Looking at the half-eaten steamed bun and a lot of vegetables left in the bowl, she was a little worried.
Food is precious these days, and it's bad to waste it, but we really can't eat anymore.
She gently nudged Lin Weiwei beside her, intending to hand her the steamed bun.
Just as Lin Weiwei was about to take it, a large hand reached out and snatched Su Wanwan's bowl away.
Su Wanwan was startled and looked up.
Bai Rongbei casually broke the half-eaten steamed bun in half, added some leftover vegetables, and ate it in a few bites.
She then scooped the remaining food from her bowl into her own and quickly finished it. Then she picked up the half-bowl of porridge that Su Wanwan had left and drank that too.
The whole process was smooth and seamless, without any hesitation or disdain.
Su Wanwan stared in disbelief, her face burning hot.
Lin Weiwei was stunned. It wasn't until Bai Rongbei put the empty bowl back in front of Su Wanwan that she reacted. She nudged Su Wanwan with her elbow and whispered in her ear, "Wow, Wanwan, your husband is really good at taking care of you. He doesn't even mind your leftovers."
Su Wanwan blushed even more and lowered her head, not daring to look at anyone.
Bai Si'an had finished eating and was wiping his mouth.
Seeing that there was still a lot left in Lin Weiwei's bowl, he said, "I have a small appetite and I'm already full. I can't eat what you left."
Lin Weiwei hadn't intended for him to eat leftovers, but upon hearing his words, her eyes darted around, and she quickly emptied her own bowl, then pushed the empty bowl towards Bai Si'an: "Who told you to eat leftovers? I was just saying I'm not full, could you go get me another cornbread?"
Bai Si'an: "..."
He glanced at Lin Weiwei, who blinked at him with an innocent look on her face.
After a two-second silence, Bai Si'an picked up his bowl, stood up, and headed to the food serving window.
Lin Weiwei smiled triumphantly and winked at Su Wanwan.
Su Wanwan couldn't help but smile.
Bai Si'an returned quickly and placed a newly taken cornbread into Lin Weiwei's bowl.
Lin Weiwei thanked him, broke open the cornbread, and ate it slowly. This time she didn't say anything, but her eyes kept darting around.
After Lin Weiwei finished eating, Bai Si'an took out two things wrapped in oil paper from his military satchel and handed one to Lin Weiwei and one to Su Wanwan.
"What is this?" Lin Weiwei took it; the oil paper was still warm.
"Naan," Bai Si'an said. "This is what we ate on the way. It takes four or five hours to drive from here to the regiment, and there's nowhere to eat along the way."
Su Wanwan carefully unwrapped the parchment paper, revealing a golden-yellow pancake, larger than a face plate, baked until hard, and sprinkled with sesame seeds.
She squeezed it with her hands; it was as solid as a rock.
Lin Weiwei opened it too, looked at the "jumbo" in her hand, and swallowed hard: "This... how do you eat this?"
"You can break it apart and eat it, or soak it in water and eat it," Bai Si'an said. "It keeps you full."
Su Wanwan and Lin Weiwei exchanged a glance, and both saw the same message in each other's eyes.
You'd probably need to drink a whole pot of water to eat just one bite of this stuff.
But no one said anything. They silently rewrapped the naan and carefully put it into their own cloth bags.
After breakfast, the four of them went back to the bungalow to retrieve their luggage.
Su Wanwan and Lin Weiwei didn't have much luggage, just two wicker trunks they brought with them, containing a few changes of clothes and some daily necessities.
The vehicle was parked in the open space in front of the camp. It was a military green Jiefang brand truck with an open cargo bed.
Quite a few people were already waiting there, including soldiers and several military dependents, with large and small bags of luggage piled up to the side.
Bai Rongbei walked over and spoke a few words to a young officer standing by the car.
The officer immediately stood at attention, saluted, and took the car keys from Bai Rongbei.
Because of his leg disability, Bai Si'an is able to sit in the driver's seat.
He walked to the passenger door, about to open it, when he glanced back at Lin Weiwei.
Lin Weiwei was looking up at the tall truck bed, feeling troubled.
The truck bed is more than a meter off the ground, and there's no ladder, so climbing up isn't easy.
Su Wanwan stood next to her, also looking troubled.
Bai Rongbei walked over and glanced at Su Wanwan: "I'll help you up first."
Before Su Wanwan could react, Bai Rongbei had already picked up her wicker trunk with one hand and thrown it onto the truck bed, while his other hand wrapped around her waist and lifted her up with a little force.
"Ah!" Su Wanwan exclaimed softly, instinctively grabbing Bai Rongbei's shoulder.
Bai Rongbei moved steadily, his arms strong and powerful, easily lifting her up so she could grab the edge of the truck bed.
Someone in the truck bed reached out to help her up, and Su Wanwan used the leverage to climb up, her face flushed red.
After she regained her balance, she looked down at Bai Rongbei and whispered, "Thank you..."
Bai Rongbei nodded without saying anything.
Lin Weiwei watched from below, her eyes lighting up: "Wow, Wanwan, your husband has amazing arm strength!"
