Chapter 17 The Stinging Soul
Chapter 17 The Stinging Soul
There was only one bottle of pepper in the control room. When the bearded man sprinkled the seasoning, a lot of people would gather around waiting to eat.
Taking advantage of being the one who cooked, the bearded man tore off a rabbit leg, and the rest of the group rushed over, ignoring Liao Qian's shouts, and devoured the small rabbit.
Wang Hong wasn't full, so he glanced around at the people who hadn't finished eating and decided to go and grab some more.
Suddenly, he remembered that a new person had come yesterday. When he saw the food the person was holding, a glint of light flashed in his eyes.
He swaggered up to her and kicked Miao Yin's leg: "Big star, why aren't you eating? Are you looking down on our food?"
Miao Yin looked at the spot where she had been kicked, now covered in a black stain, and her eyes flashed with displeasure.
She looked back coldly.
Wang Hong felt a chill run down his spine from the sharpness in her eyes. He realized that he had actually been frightened by such a look and immediately felt annoyed.
He scoffed, "What kind of attitude does this woman have! Does she think everyone's trying to fawn over her?"
He stared at her unabashedly, his gaze sweeping from her face down to her chest. After a moment, he chuckled cryptically before his eyes fell on her fair legs.
"Tsk tsk, celebrities are so beautiful. They used to rely on their bodies to get ahead in the entertainment industry, and now they could easily survive in the apocalypse, right? How about it, want to have some fun with me? I'll protect you, hahaha..."
Apart from Yan Shuzhou, everyone around Miao Yin avoided Wang Hong with disgust when he came over.
The others, however, all turned a deaf ear and pretended not to see what was happening.
Miao Yin remained silent for a moment, then suddenly smiled.
She picked up the quail egg in her hand and shook it: "You came here to get this, right?"
Seeing her like this, Wang Hong assumed that she had given in and was about to start trying to please him.
"Yeah, is the big star going to feed me?"
Miao Yin stood up, tore open the packaging bag, and dumped the quail eggs on the ground. The eggs spilled juice, and the onlookers couldn't help but look at her with regret.
Miao Yin pointed to the ground: "If you want to eat it, kneel down and lick it clean."
"Damn it!" Wang Hong cursed, "You think I'm a dog?!"
Miao Yin exclaimed in surprise, "Oh? You actually found out?"
"You shameless bitch!"
Wang Hong was completely enraged and reached out to punch her.
Before Miao Yin could make a move, a figure blocked her way.
It was Yan Shuzhou.
Miao Yin tilted her head.
"Get the hell out of my way!" Wang Hong shouted.
Yan Shuzhou whispered, "Don't do that."
"What did you say? You think you can interfere in my affairs?!"
Wang Hong's eyes darted between the two of them, then he suddenly realized, "Oh, I know, you've got your eye on her, haven't you? Impressive, you're an actress after all, you really know how to seduce people. So, did she sleep with you last night? Was it great?"
"...No, don't talk nonsense," Yan Shuzhou said, somewhat annoyed.
At this moment, a middle-aged man in a suit and tie interrupted, angrily saying, "What are you all shouting about! I think you're courting death, trying to lure a monster in!"
Yan Shuzhou's eyes darted away when he saw the middle-aged man, and he called out hesitantly, "...Dad."
So Yan's father slapped him across the face: "Useless thing, you only cause trouble!"
The slap was extremely powerful, and Yan Shuzhou staggered back several steps. His cheek swelled up immediately, feeling numb and painful. He lowered his head, not daring to speak, his fingertips trembling slightly.
Seeing this, Yan's mother also came over.
She was a woman who took excellent care of herself.
She wore a mink coat and green leather high heels, and every strand of her hair was neatly styled on her head. Even though her face showed signs of fatigue from not having rested for many days, it was still clear that she took great care of herself.
She patted her father's back with one hand to soothe him, while holding her youngest son's hand with the other.
"Alright, don't be angry," Mrs. Yan said softly.
"Look at the son you've spoiled! What can he do besides cause trouble for adults! He's a good-for-nothing. He doesn't know how to be filial to his parents when he has food, and he even gives it away to others. All these years of raising him have been for nothing!" Yan's father was obviously the one who didn't manage to get the rabbit meat.
Despite being insulted so rudely, Yan's mother remained calm and obedient, while her youngest son, dressed in designer clothes, rolled his eyes impatiently.
Wang Hong spat, "Alright, stop this back-and-forth and get out of here. I'm going to teach this bitch a lesson!"
Without Yan Shuzhou's obstruction, Wang Hong reached out to pull at Miao Yin's clothes.
Just as he was about to touch the other person, an extremely sharp alarm suddenly sounded!
"Who? Who's making that noise! Turn it off! Are you trying to kill us?!" someone shouted in panic.
"Get out of the way, let me in!"
Everyone sprang to their feet like startled birds, quickly moving away from the doorway and hiding inside.
Even Wang Hong and the Yan family, who had just been arrogant, immediately ran to a place further away from the door.
"Everyone calm down!"
Liao Qian listened carefully to the sound, and his expression changed drastically: "No, this sound is coming from outside! And it's very close to us!"
"Could it be that someone is coming to rescue us!"
"Impossible! Such a loud noise, don't they have a death wish!"
Liao Qian suddenly remembered something and called out to Miao Yin, "Did you leave something behind outside?"
Otherwise, everything was fine a few days ago, so how come something unexpected happened after she arrived?
Miao Yin shook her head: "How could that be?"
"Did you see anything outside that made a sound when you came here?" Liao Qian persisted.
Miao Yin shook her head again.
"Damn it, someone go out and smash everything outside!" Wang Hong kept shoving the people around him.
But who dares to go out?
Those monsters outside are man-eating creatures!
"Let the newcomer out! She hasn't contributed anything anyway, has she?" someone in the crowd said hoarsely.
Miao Yin looked in the direction of the sound and saw the person hurriedly lower their head and hide behind someone else.
But she still recognized the person.
Zhang Manyu.
This statement broke the deadlock.
As if the ice on the sea had been broken, more and more people began to make suggestions.
"That's right! The newcomer should be sent! Otherwise, why should she eat our food!"
"This has never happened before, but it just happened as soon as she arrived. She must be a jinx!"
"If you come here, you have to make a contribution! Otherwise, why let her in?"
"New guy, get out! Get out!"
They knew better than anyone what would happen once they got out.
So they all had ferocious expressions, hiding in the crowd, standing in the shadows, pushing the scapegoat.
Some people still had a conscience and knew how terrible it was to send a young girl out to her death, but they dared not plead for her, because if they objected, they might be the ones to be sent out.
So they remained silent and closed their eyes to the world.
Even Yan Shuzhou seemed lost in his own emotions for a moment when they met eyes, before silently lowering his gaze.
Miao Yin looked down at her wrist, which was being held. Liao Qian's grip was very strong, and the edge of her wrist was already turning white from being pressed down.
“Miss Miao, I’m sorry, but the minority must submit to the majority, you… understand?”
"..."
"of course."
"I'm happy to do it for everyone's survival."
The dim light cast a shadow on her face, and the slightly upturned corners of her mouth gave her a half-smile, making her cool face look somewhat inscrutable. The bright red birthmark between her eyebrows was striking.
At that moment, Liao Qian was in a daze and thought he saw the gods and Buddhas who were saving people fall into hell.
She recoiled as if burned.
Miao Yin ignored him and walked to the door on her own before turning back to Liao Qian and saying, "Do I have to open the door myself?"
To prevent the monster from breaking down the door, they put several locks on it and piled up a lot of heavy objects.
"Quickly, a few people come and move these things!" Liao Qian ordered.
Knowing they didn't need to go out, several people quickly ran over to help move the heavy objects. As soon as they finished moving everything, they immediately moved to the side.
Liao Qian took out the key, unlocked the lock, and then warned Miao Yin.
"I'll close the door as soon as you leave, so you can't hesitate. You have to leave right away and turn that thing off, or we're all doomed, understand?"
"Row."
Seeing her nonchalant demeanor, Liao Qian's heart pounded with anxiety. Her intuition told her that once the other person left, something terrible was bound to happen!
But with the die already cast, she really had no other choice.
In the control room, more than fifty people stared intently at this side, so tense that they couldn't utter a sound. Their desire to live had turned into a deathly silence.
"Say what you mean and do what you say."
Liao Qian pressed both hands on the doorknob, took a deep breath, and then flung the door open.
The dull ringing suddenly turned shrill as the door opened, piercing the air into the control room; the deathly bell instantly wounded everyone's soul.
As soon as Miao Yin approached the door, Liao Qian shoved her hard, pushing her out of the control room.
"Oh!"
The door was closed.
