Chapter 285: Meal Time!
Chapter 285: Meal Time!
"The Demon King."
The title lingered quietly in the room. Yet there was no fear behind Seraphina’s voice anymore. Despite what she had been told about Demons in the past, she completely trusted Jax after he saved her.
Jax looked down at her for a brief moment, golden eyes studying the small Merfolk Princess clinging to him so naturally now. Then he sighed softly through his nose.
"...Yeah."
Seraphina’s arms tightened around him again immediately after he answered, like hearing him confirm it somehow reassured her further.
The healers nearby exchanged faintly amused looks. One of them smiled politely, "She’s attached very quickly. It’s quite cute Your Majesty,"
Jax glanced sideways at them.
"...I noticed."
Seraphina puffed her cheeks slightly, "I’m not attached. You just feel very warm and comfortable," Seraphina said as a rebuttal.
The healers looked unconvinced and Jax looked even less convinced, "You’ve been holding onto me for the last five minutes."
"...That doesn’t count."
Jax smirked faintly.
"Sure."
The little Princess looked scandalized at not being believed, but before she could continue arguing, her stomach suddenly let out a very audible growl and the room went silent.
Seraphina froze and Jax slowly looked downward.
The small Princess immediately buried her face against his chest again in complete embarrassment.
"...I didn’t hear that," she mumbled weakly.
Jax raised an eyebrow.
"Pretty sure the entire hallway heard it."
One of the healers failed to suppress another laugh. Seraphina looked moments away from dying of humiliation.
Jax chuckled quietly under his breath before finally shaking his head.
"...Have you eaten yet since we brought you back?"
"...No." Seraphina muttered softly.
"Why not?" Jax asked.
She hesitated slightly, "...I was waiting."
Jax blinked once.
"For me?"
A small nod.
"...Oh."
For some reason, that answer hit a little differently than he expected.
The room grew briefly quieter afterward.
Then Jax straightened fully again.
"Alright."
Seraphina looked up curiously.
"Alright?"
"We’re fixing that."
Before she could react further, Jax moved.
One arm slid beneath her effortlessly before lifting her up completely.
Seraphina let out a tiny sound of surprise as she was suddenly carried against him.
The healers blinked.
Jax ignored them.
"Since you’re apparently refusing to function properly until I show up," he said calmly, "you’re eating with me."
Seraphina’s violet eyes widened.
"With you?"
"Yeah."
Her expression brightened instantly.
"Okay!"
The response came so fast that even Jax snorted quietly in amusement.
The healers bowed politely as he turned toward the door.
"Continue monitoring the others," Jax instructed.
"Inform me immediately if anything changes."
"Of course, Your Majesty."
Without another word, Jax left the chamber carrying Seraphina in one arm while she instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck.
The moment they entered the hallway, nearby attendants immediately straightened.
"Your Majesty."
Some of them visibly blinked seeing the small purple-haired girl being carried so casually by the Demon King himself.
Seraphina noticed the looks almost immediately and instinctively pressed slightly closer to Jax.
His hand moved absentmindedly against her back.
"...Relax."
That single word was enough. Her body eased almost instantly afterward. As they moved through the medical district, Seraphina’s attention slowly began wandering.
Her eyes moved across everything around them. The architecture, the flowing mana, the calm atmosphere, the various Demons walking all around.
It was nothing like the barbaric Demon Kingdom she had been told about.
"...It’s really different," she whispered quietly.
Jax glanced at her.
"Different from what?"
She hesitated.
"...What they said."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"The Church."
A small nod.
"They always said Demons were cruel," she admitted softly.
"That your lands were full of suffering and violence."
Her gaze drifted through the halls again.
"But everyone here looks... happy."
Jax remained silent for a moment before speaking, "Most people lie when it benefits them."
Seraphina blinked slowly.
"...Oh."
Jax smirked faintly.
"Welcome to politics."
That earned a tiny laugh from her, and hearing it made the atmosphere around Jax lighten slightly.
By the time they reached the upper palace levels, the morning atmosphere had fully settled across the capital.
Golden sunlight streamed through enormous windows and servants moved efficiently through the corridors.
Mana-powered chandeliers glowed warmly overhead.
Seraphina’s eyes widened more and more the deeper into the palace they went.
"...This is where you live?"
"Yeah."
"It’s huge..."
Jax chuckled quietly.
"That’s usually the reaction."
Finally, they reached their destination.
The royal dining hall.
Massive doors opened smoothly as Jax approached, revealing a breathtaking chamber lined with elegant obsidian pillars and enormous crystal windows overlooking the Demon Capital below.
And near the center, a luxurious breakfast spread had already been prepared. The scent alone filled the room instantly.
Freshly baked pastries, warm breads, roasted meats glazed with fragrant sauces.Fruit platters shimmering with mana-enhanced freshness.
Various seafood dishes, sweet creams, delicious juices and tea. Even enchanted desserts.
The entire table looked absurdly excessive.
Seraphina stared in absolute shock.
"...Whoa..."
Jax smirked faintly.
"Yeah. Serika tends to overprepare."
Right on cue, a familiar voice echoed from nearby.
"You say that like it’s a bad thing."
Serika stepped into view carrying another tray effortlessly. The elegant maid immediately bowed, her elegant fox tails swaying.
"Good morning, Your Majesty."
Then her eyes shifted toward Seraphina. A faint smile appeared almost instantly.
"...So this is the little Princess."
Seraphina immediately looked slightly nervous again.
Jax noticed immediately.
"She’s fine," he said calmly.
Serika nodded politely.
"Of course."
Her tone was warm and reassuring.
"Welcome to the palace, Princess Seraphina."
The little Merfolk blinked.
"...You know my name?"
Serika smiled softly.
"Word travels quickly here."
Jax sat down afterward, placing Seraphina gently beside him.
The little Princess continued staring at the table in complete disbelief.
"...Can I really eat this?"
Jax raised an eyebrow.
"Why wouldn’t you?"
"It’s... a lot..."
"Good."
He leaned back slightly in his chair.
"Eat whatever you want."
Seraphina looked stunned.
"Anything?"
"Yeah."
Her eyes widened further.
"...Really?"
Jax snorted quietly.
"You ask a lot of follow-up questions."
Seraphina finally reached toward one of the pastries and took a small bite.
"...Good?"
Seraphina looked at the pastry like it had personally changed her life.
"...Very good."
Jax smirked faintly.
"Thought so."
From there, things escalated rapidly.
The hesitation disappeared almost completely. Seraphina began trying different foods one after another, her eyes lighting up more each time.
"This is amazing..."
"What is this?"
"...Sweet..."
"How does this taste so good?!"
